A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dear BC Family,

Planning for the Future:  Our company has always gone to great lengths to Plan for the Future.  Planning for how we would fill the shoes of 40-year BC employee and past CEO Jerry Hoog was not easy, but steps were put in place years ago in preparation for this day.  The positive impact Jerry has placed on this organization has helped shape what BC is today and will continue to help guide us into the future.  Good news, although Jerry’s retirement was official in early March, he will remain involved as Chairman of the Board with our outside Board of Directors.  I could not think of a more worthy replacement than our past President and current CEO, James Anderson.  From his first internship with BC, to his 25+ year path to CEO, James has devoted his entire professional career to BC and will continue to do great things in this position.  Together, James and I promise to do our part to help this company achieve our strategic vision of BC being Safer, Faster, Better than our competition.

Entering my 20th year with BC, and my 3rd month as President, I have had time to reflect and try to prioritize some overlaying objectives for 2022.

Field First Culture:  While it is important for companies to evolve, it is equally important for us to remember what got us where we are today.  Restating our core purpose: Building Better Lives, first and foremost is about building buildings.  We cannot do any of this without our project teams in the field.  They are the backbone of our company, and it is the duty of the rest of us to support them.  With this, I challenge everyone not working in “the field” to ask yourself: What can I do to help support the field and What can I do to show the field they are valued and appreciated?

Tell Me Something Good:  While the last two years have been challenging trying to build in the middle of a pandemic, there are a lot of great things happening to set 2022 up for success.

  • We are set up to have a Record Revenue year. Our company has never topped $800M worth of revenue in a single year, but we are poised to do so this year.
  • We have a record amount of over $1B of Backlog, which is double the amount we had at this time last year. This allows us to be more selective with the projects we pursue.
  • We need to continually recognize and celebrate the great things our coworkers are doing, because there are a lot of great things happening all around us.

Investing in our Most Valuable Asset… Our Employees:  2022 will be a year of continued focus on our employees with an emphasis on Employee Engagement & Development, Career Path Planning and a Perpetual Training Program.  The COOP, our learning and performance management system, will help give career insights through training, performance reviews, feedback, goal setting, and regular check-ins with your supervisor.

I am looking forward to watching us continue to grow and evolve together and I appreciate what each of you do to make this company great!

News Bartlette Cocke March 2022

SAFETY AWARENESS

During the months of October and November 2021, the officers of Bartlett Cocke General Contractors continued the mission of making the rounds to visit all active projects to focus on Safety plus an emphasis on Quality.  The company historically experienced an increased number of accidents in the 4th quarter, which we proactively want to change.

Our past discussions have been “Safety is My Job” and “If You See Something, Say Something” with the goal of consistently promoting our company’s safety culture and empowering all employees to stop unsafe work activity.  During the project visits, the officer and/or Regional Safety Director are asking project team members to speak up and give examples of safety concerns that they have recently witnessed and stopped to keep workers safe.  We have also discussed “a foot can save a hand,” meaning workers should keep at least one-foot separation between the material that they are cutting and the saw or tool that they are using to cut with.

In addition to the focused discussions on Safety and Safety planning, we discussed focusing more attention on our Quality Assurance and Quality Control plans moving forward. Like safety – Quality is everyone’s job and is led at the project level by the project team’s leadership. This leader will fill out the quality control responsibility matrix which clarifies who is responsible for some of the special tasks that make a QA/QC program successful.

For all projects in the future, we must prepare a site-specific Safety Plan and a QA/QC Plan.  We also strongly encourage each project to implement a daily “Safety Walk” to document worker safety, safety planning, and assurance that the project is being executed in a safe manner.  This daily safety walk should be performed by the Assistant Superintendent and documented each day.  Additionally, a daily “Quality Walk” should be performed by the Assistant Project Manager to verify that the installed products are as specified and that the project is being constructed in accordance with the QA/QC plan.

SAFETY ALERT AND LESSONS LEARNED

The BC Safety Team has prepared the attached Safety Alert – Masonry Wall Bracing – to provide background, safe practices, and additional to properly plan for the erection of CMU walls, as well as Safety Alert – Floor-Roof-Pier Openings and Electrical Safety Awareness in order to stay mindful around hazardous areas!

If you need help, training, or have questions regarding masonry wall bracing, Handling Electrical wires, or floor-roof-pier openings, please contact your Regional Safety Director to review the situation(s).  They will help find the best solutions to keep everyone safe.  We also have Roger Hoffmann, P.E., who is our Structural Systems Manager to help review complex structural systems.  The Safety Department and Roger can help implement best practices for safer installations of masonry walls.

Share this information with your field teams during upcoming Safety Huddles to raise awareness to ALL BCGC employees.

Celebrating Women in Construction and the Ladies' Luncheon!

We had the pleasure of interviewing several of the amazing women who work here at Bartlett Cocke who each gave their unique perspectives on what it means to be a woman in construction.

Additionally, Phyna Rojas took it upon herself to organize the new Women’s Luncheon starting in March!

“This year I decided to make it during the Women in Construction week. Before it had been phased out,  we hosted it at Petroleum Club in December. I have thought about this for a couple of years why it had been removed, and I wanted to be a voice of reason to bring it back. Being in the industry full of men, WHY not celebrate us and every woman in Construction industry. It feels beautiful to be appreciated. When a company does that, our teamwork and bond can go a long way. Leadership shows reflection and I’m happy to be a part of the team.”

James Anderson also gave a speech and presented gift cards to the attendees.

Roving Rooster get together!

In 2021, the Compass Committee launched the Bartlett Cocke of the Month Award. The award is a fun way to recognize up-and-coming employees that exemplify our core values throughout the year. Each winner has the great honor of hosting the “Roving Rooster” (a large painting of a rooster) through the month of being recognized. Earlier this year we were able to bring all of the 2021 Rooster winners together for a chance to know one another and celebrate them one more time. Roosters, you truly are a special group! Congratulations!. Way to MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Project:  Borlaug Center Renovation + Addition

Amount:  $36,750,000

Contract:  CM@R

Includes renovation of 65,634 SF and an addition of 19,366 SF to the Borlaug Center located on the main campus of Texas A&M in College Station. The updated facility is programmed to provide AgriLife Research with a modern research lab facility that becomes a platform for executing the strategic plan for the Nutrition Department and launching the newly established Institute for Advancing Health through Agriculture. Providing research capacity to advance strategic research areas that focus on the intersection of agriculture, nutrition and health, the Borlaug Center will support twenty-four principal investigators at various stages of their careers. Open lab configurations will support increased collaboration and efficiency, allowing each entity to collocate investigators strategically. Each lab module provides six workstations, access to fume hoods, space for floor-standing equipment, and a dedicated procedure room. Procedure rooms are programmed to provide flexibility and the ability for customization per the specific research requirements of each principal investigator. Shared support supplements open lab space by providing access to cold rooms, a core facility suite, a histology suite, a microscopy suite, freezer rooms, autoclaves, and animal holding space. In addition to wet-lab space, dry labs for computational research are included for twelve principal investigators. Office space and post-doctoral/graduate student workstations are grouped as a separate zone—for operational efficiency—and include space for huddle rooms, conference rooms, and lounge / break space. In Memoriam

Headshot of man

BC Family,

It is with a deeply saddened heart that I inform you all that Raymond Heath lost his battle with a lengthy illness and passed away on Saturday evening.

Throughout his career, Raymond served in many roles within BCGC from Superintendent and Project Manager to Vice President of Operations in East Texas.   He officially retired at the end of last year as a Senior Project Manager in South Texas with just over 30 years with BCGC and more than 43 years of industry experience.

Raymond’s love for his family and friends and passion for his profession were unquestionable.  He was highly respected and greatly appreciated by those he worked for and was considered a knowledgeable teacher, devoted mentor, a true friend by those of us who worked under and alongside of him.
