SUMMER 2021

NEWSLETTER

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Hello summer! It is that time of year again when we need sunshine and dry weather to maintain production while also needing some rain to help keep the dust down and new landscaping alive. With outdoor temperatures on the rise, our focus on safety awareness and following best practices to prevent heat stress and heat-related illness must also increase for everyone working outdoors. While we may have to suffer through the summer heat, I think we can all agree about feeling fortunate to live and work in Texas where the construction market appears to be heating up just as fast as the weather. While many other parts of the country have been slow to reopen since the beginning of the year, we have been busy both putting work in place and successfully pursuing and winning new work across the state.

I am pleased to report that each of our projects scheduled to complete this summer are on track to achieve substantial completion. Despite unprecedented volatility in the cost and procurement of materials, shortages of skilled labor, lost time from a historic winter storm (aka“Snovid”), and a very wet spring, our project teams have demonstrated grit and agility and put forth tremendous effort to MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Since the beginning of the year, we have been awarded over $600 million in new work.  The bulk of this work will be executed in 2022 and 2023. What that means is our backlog of revenue for the next two years is extremely strong, and 2022 is already shaping up to be one of our biggest years ever. There is an enormous amount of upcoming work and opportunities across the state. Our strategy remains focused on pursuing work within Texas, primarily in the K-12, Higher Education, Private Development, and Industrial/Manufacturing market segments. With the large amount of work we have in progress and scheduled to start within the next 6 to 8 months, we now find ourselves in a great position to target and be more selective on where and what projects we pursue.

The resolve of the Bartlett Cocke Family to care for one another, plan for the future, and continuously improve ourselves and our company has never been stronger than it is right now.  No matter what challenges we face, the past year has proved that we are stronger together.  We have always said, “We win and lose together.” When we share our collective thoughts, talents, and resources across all market sectors, geographic regions, and departments, our ability to win dramatically increases. Together, we are taking our proposals, interviews, and project planning, management, and execution to the next level.

We are ONE BARTLETT COCKE!  As one family working together, we will continue to win, continue to improve, continue to grow, and continue Building Better Lives for ourselves and our community for many years to come.

Have a great summer and stay cool, safe, and healthy!

Best regards,

James

Recruiting New Talent

Mark Hebert and Jonathan Piedra recruiting some new young talent at the SAISD Lanier High School Construction Program.  BC is constantly in search of new and talented individuals to add to our team.

Safety First

Our Dripping Springs Elementary School team is putting “Safety First”  by placing the Jobsite entrance gate far enough off the busy county road to allow for delivery trucks to stage out of traffic.

Congrats to Russell Harder for being selected as Project Manager of the Year by the American Subcontractors Association of San Antonio.  It is great to have our trade partners recognize the talent we have within our organization. Read More >

Weekly Planning Board Perfection

Our Urban East Multifamily project is taking Weekly Planning Boards to the next level.  This project has three different turnover phases and the team is using a “count down clock” for each phase.

May 2021

Making it Happen!

Congrats to Ryan Bartlett for completing his MBA!  When first starting with BC  4 years ago, Ryan mentioned his goal of completing his MBA during his annual review.  BC Leadership approved a plan to utilize our Tuition Reimbursement Program to help Ryan achieve his goal and Ryan made it happen!

Safety First

Our Kerrville Middle School team is getting creative to help monitor safety compliance.  Across the company, there is a proven correlation between recent accidents and workers not completing the site-specific orientation.  The project-specific bands make it very apparent who has and hasn’t been through orientation.

Drone Deploy for the Win!

Our Dripping Springs Elementary School team is continuing to leverage technology to become more efficient.  They recently received a price that appeared high for re-establishing disturbed areas.  They used Drone Deploy to accurately show quantities of hydromulch needed which turned into significant savings with the landscaping sub.

Sought After

The success of the work being performed and the work ethic of the teams in College Station has not gone unnoticed by heads of the departments and FP&C. Bartlett Cocke is now being sought after to assist with early planning and budgeting for future projects which positions us for continued success in Aggieland.

June 2021

Leveraging Technology

Our Blinn-RELLIS team found that the specified FCU’s required service access from two sides, making it nearly impossible to install.  We convinced them a VAV system would be better and saved over $900k.  More notably, our competitors did not find this problem in recent new buildings.  Safer, faster BETTER than our competition!

Safety First

Huge congratulations to Jeremy Smart for completing his Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO) certification.  In addition to increasing his overall safety knowledge, this will allow Jeremy to conduct OSHA 10 and 30-hour training courses.  SAFER, faster better than anyone.

Taking Care of Our Client

The Daughters of the Republic is a special group of women who work hard to preserve the history of the great state of Texas.  Our main contact, Brenda Jenkins, went out of her way to talk to Randall Jay to tell him how impressed she has been with our team building their new History Center.  She said they even reserve a parking space for her at the jobsite office.  It’s the little things that matter sometimes.

Teamwork!

Hats off to Kyle Wahrmund for quickly becoming a valuable Tilt Wall Construction resource.  Kyle was instrumental in the planning and sequencing of the very challenging Dripping Springs ES, and he also led the efforts in creating a Tilt Wall QAQC plan which has been used in recent proposal responses in our STX office.

July 2021

BC Interns Soaring to New Heights

As part of an ongoing effort to improve the employee experience, we have revamped our Intern Program to include bi-weekly huddles ensuring our interns receive a well-rounded experience through Jobsite visits, formal training, and Tech day that highlighted different technologies Bartlett Cocke uses to build safer, faster, and better than anyone!

Multifamily Sub Appreciation Lunch

Special thanks to Josh, Danielle, Phyna, Zack, Scott, Brandon, David, and Angel for coordinating, setting up, and tearing down the Multifamily Subcontractor Appreciation Lunch!  Thanks also to Trent for coming down from Austin to visit with subs as well.  We had over 70 people attend the event!

ETX APM's On a Mission!

The ETX Assistant Project Manager group set a goal of having all ETX APM’s get their Drone Pilot Certification by July 19th and they achieved their goal.  This fits into BC’s overall objective of having a certified drone pilot on every project and leveraging technology to help us build safer, faster, and better than anyone!

As we are all aware, the summer heat is back in full force.  Summer months bring high humidity and high temperatures and the combination of the two can be dangerous.  It is very important that we all focus on the changing weather conditions and protect ourselves, our employees, and our trade partners from heat illness and heat exhaustion.  This time of year is just as hard on our bodies as the hottest part of the year, as we are not acclimated to the heat yet.

Stick to the basics:

  • Drink plenty of water! (Drink 1 cup or 8 ounces, every 15-20 minutes. Drinking at shorter intervals is more effective than drinking larger quantities infrequently)
  • Balance sports drinks and water (don’t drink only water or only sports drinks, mix the two)
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol (both are diuretics and cause you to lose water faster)
  • Avoid energy drinks!!
  • Eat lighter meals
  • Take breaks in the shade from the heat and the sun
  • Plan work activities accordingly
  • Help climatize new employees or ones that have not worked for an extended time (we cannot put a brand new intern in the field all day in the sun their first week!)

If you feel ill or suspect someone on the job is ill from heat sickness or heat exhaustion, provide proper first aid immediately.  Follow this link for OSHA guidelines for heat illness first aid. https://www.osha.gov/heat-exposure/illness-first-aid

REMEMBER: if someone has stopped sweating, their skin is hot to the touch, or has lost consciousness that is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY!

This is the first in a series of awareness messages from me this year.  Let’s be safe for ourselves, our BCGC team members, and our trade partners.  Discuss heat illness prevention in your subcontractor meetings, weekly safety meetings, and include it in your Daily Work Planner. Thank you for all of your efforts and please contact your Regional Safety Director with your questions or concerns.

TXST Infrastructure Research Lab

Region:   South Texas

Owner: Texas State University (Eat ‘Em Up Cats!)

Amount: $11 Mil

Contract: CSP

Bartlett Cocke has secured a strategic win and success with the award of this project!  This project is significant for multiple reasons:

  • This was a strategic pursuit to get back on the Texas State University campus after a 10+ year absence.  It has been a high priority corporate goal for some time to earn an opportunity from this owner.
  • This has been a targeted pursuit for well over a year and every department in the company played a vital role in securing this project.
  • We were only successful in this pursuit because WE are ONE Bartlett Cocke and our East Texas Family delivered such an outstanding building at the Texas A&M Center for Infrastructure Renewal project.  The TAMU CIR project was very similar and put us in a elite class of contractors who have successfully completed these highly technical and complex strong wall and strong floor projects.
  • Because of our qualifications and previous experience at TAMU CIR, We were selected despite being ranked 8th out of 9 on price!

The owner clearly recognized the quality and the value of selecting Bartlett Cocke for this very important and highly technical project.

The proposed Infrastructure Research Laboratory (IRL) is a 11,071 (GSF) facility planned to allow large-scale testing of structural systems and components.  Construction will be performed on the Texas State University STAR Park Campus in San Marcos, Texas.  The construction of the IRL Laboratory will include extensive building excavation, drilled concrete piers, a pre-engineered metal building, mass concrete installation of a basement floor and walls, a strong floor, a strong wall, a bridge crane, and hydraulic pump system.

The Industrial Team has been awarded the Kuraray EVOL Control Room Upgrade Project located in Pasadena, Texas. The scope of work includes a full renovation of the operator’s area, restrooms, electrical and HVAC systems. The awarded contract amount of $700,000 is not substantial; however, this marks 3 new MSA’s (Master Service Agreement) for the Industrial team in 2020.
